הירח שלא נראה.

כמו שסיפרתי קודם הירח לא נראה מהארץ ביום חמישי שעבר (א' תשרי תשע"א). אבל בניתוח של הצילומים של נחמיה גורדון בהר חזקיהו הופיע דמות של הירח בדיוק במקום הצפוי ובצורה הצפויה. הדמות מופיעה גם הערוץ האדום, הירוק והכחול ודמות כזה לא מופיע בתמונות אחרות ולכן היא לא נובעת מתקלה במצלמה. התמונה מוכיחה שיריח היה שם והיה חלש מדי מכדי לראותו בעין. התמונה דומה לזה שצילמתי לפני ארבע שנים.

בטוח ישאלו אותי איך מותר לצלם בחג ראש השנה ואיך מותר להשתמש בתמונה שצולמה באיסור? לכן אני עונה עכשיו. אסור ליהודי לנסוע במכונית ולצלם בחג ואכן לפי ההלכה התמונה צולמה באיסור. מותר ליהודי אחר להשתמש בדבר שנעשה באיסור בחג לאחר החג ואחרי שעבר הזמן שלקח לעשות אותו בתנאי שלא עשה את הפעולה עבורו. מאחר שהצלם עשה את זה ביוזמתו ולצורכו ולא בשבילי ובקשתי את התמונה יום אחרי החג והשבת היה מותר לי להשתמש בתמונה.

בחודש הבא הירח יופיע מהארץ הארץ בשבת, א' חשון תשע"א. הירח עשוי להיראות לעין מירושלים בין 17:11 ו-18:06. בשעה 17:11, הירח יהיה באזימות °½239, זרת 1 (°24) שמאלה משקיעת השמש וברום אגרוף 1 (°10). יש סיכוי שהירח ייראה יום קודם (יום ששי) מהקריביאן ודרום מערב ארה"ב ואילו מצפון אירוה הירח ייראה רק למחרת (יום ראשון).

The Moon that was not seen.

As was stated previously, the Moon was not seen from Israel last Thursday 9^th September 2010. However, upon analyzing Nehemia Gordon’s photographs from Mt. Hezkiyahu an image of the Moon appeared exactly in the expected place and orientation. The image appears in all three color channels and does not appear in other photographs, ruling out an artifact in the camera sensor. The photograph proves that the Moon was there but that it was too faint to see with the naked eye. The picture is similar to the one that I took four years ago.

I am sure that I will be asked how is it permitted to photograph on Yom Tov (Rosh Hashanah) and how is it permitted to use a picture that was forbidden to photograph? So I will preempt the question by answering now. It is forbidden for a Jew to travel by car and photograph on Yom Tov. Indeed according to (rabbinic Orthodox) Jewish law it was forbidden to take this photograph. It is, however, permitted for someone else to use something that was forbidden to prepare on Yom Tov after Yom Tov and after enough time has elapsed that it took to prepare it provided that it was not done on the user’s behalf. Since this picture was taken of his own volition and for his use and not for me, and the fact that I asked for it only the day after Yom Tov and Shabbat means that it was permitted for me to use it.

Next month, the Moon is expected to appear from Jerusalem on Saturday 9^th October 2010 between 17:11 and 19:54. At 18:41, the Moon will be at azimuth 239½°, 1 span (24°) left of the sunset and 1 fists (10°) high. The Moon may be seen a day earlier (Friday) from the Caribbean and the southwestern USA while from northern Europe the Moon will only be seen the following day (Sunday).
