Lev group is interested in analytical chemistry and advanced materials. Examples of on going research projects include:

Analytical Chemistry

  • Electrochemical and mass spectrometric investigation of illicit drugs by mass spectrometry and/or by electroanalytical methods.
  • Development and implementation of analytical methods for the determination of traces of emerging organic contaminants and their use to quantify wastewater leakage to water sources.
  • Development of analytical sampling methods for the quantification of the chemical composition of pore water in the vadose zone.
  • Implementation of advanced and novel analytical methods for studies of the depth profile of DOC, oxygen, emerging pollutants and other parameters in the vadose zone of water recharge systems.

Advanced Materials

    Chemistry: a European J 2016
  • Stabilization of metal and semimetal oxide sols by a novel capping agent - hydrogen peroxide.
  • Coating of surfaces and particles by peroxy-nano particles.
  • Transformation of the peroxy-coatings to nanocrystalline oxides, or to the respective elements or sulfides by mild treatment.
  • Use of reduced graphene oxide-coated by p-block elements, their oxides in crystalline or amorphous forms as lithium ion battery and sodium ion battery anodes.
  • Development of nanostructured manganese oxide catalysts for water purification.

Ovadia Lev is a professor of chemistry at the Casali Center for Applied Chemistry, the Institute of Chemistry and head of Environmental Chemistry Laboratory of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His research focuses on water and wastewater treatment, development of advanced materials for environmental and green chemistry and the analytical chemistry and electrochemistry of trace organic contaminants.

Prof. Lev has contributed to the development of the fields of sol-gel electrochemistry and hydrogen peroxide sol-gel chemistry (including fundamental aspects and applications for lithium and sodium ion batteries), scanning electrochemical mass spectrometry (SCM) and scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM). Professor Lev has been instrumental in providing science-based regulations, such as the Guidance manual for ozone disinfection in the USA, tools for quantification of leakage from Soil Aquifer Treatment systems to nearby drinking water wells, and quantification of wastewater leakage to water sources by quantification of emerging organic contaminants (micropollutants).


Prof. Lev is recipient of the Fulbright postdoctoral fellowship, the Barnard scholarship awarded by the AAAS and the USEPA, the Key Innovations Award awarded by the Hebrew University and he is Fellow of the International Society of Electrochemistry.

The group is participating in a collaborative project in Singapore, holds a laboratory in the CREATE campus in Singapore and some of its members are stationed in Singapore.
