הירח נראה אתמול (יום שלישי, א' בתמוז תשס"ט) מהארץ כמפורט בהמשך. תודה לכל מי שחיפש את הירח ודִווח.

כפי שהזכרתי קודם, בדרך כלל, ברוחב של הארץ, הירח נעלם לשנים או שלושה ולפעמים ארבע לילות. חישובים תיאורטיים רמזו שפעם בכ-18 שנה בארץ, יש לירח סיכוי סביר להיעלם רק ללילה אחד. זה קורה כאשר הירח קרוב לארץ בעדיפות לאמצע הקיץ (אך יכול לקרה גם מאמצע החורף). החודש היה מקרה כזה אך בהסתברות נמוכה מאוד לראייה בעין ואכן הירח המתמעט נראה רק במשקפת.

לפני כשנה ראו אנשי האגודה הישראלית לצפייה בירח את שני הסהרים גב-אל-גב בעין בלתי מזוינת. השנה הראייה הייתה קשה יותר ולמרות זאת הצלחנו לראות אותו בעזרת משקפת. למיטב ידיעתי אני הראשון לראות תופעה זאת פעמיים אפילו בעזרת מכשור.

התופעה נדירה וקיימת אפשרות לראותה שוב מהארץ רק בכ"ט-ל' שבט תשע"ד עם הסתברות הראייה לעין של 11%.

בחודש הבא הירח יופיע ביום חמישי, ב' באב תשס"ט. מירושלים (ודומה לכך בשאר הארץ) תיתכן ראייה בין 19:38 ו-20:39 והירח יהיה קל מאוד לראייה. בשעה 19:38 הירח יהיה באזימות °276 (°½18 שמאלה ממקום שקיעת השמש) וברום °½12. ייתכן ראייה יום קודם בקושי רב מאוד מדרום מערב ארה"ב ואילו מסקנדינביה הירח ייראה רק ביום ששי.

גב-אל-גב סהרי הירח שנראו ממעלה אדומים, בצד ימין הירח המתמעט ביום שני א' בתמוז תשס"ט 05:01 ובצד שמאל הירח המתחדש ביום שלישי ב' בתמוז תשס"ט 20:16. ניגוד התמונות הוגבר פי שלוש.

The Moon was seen yesterday (Tuesday 23^rd June 2009) from Israel as described below. Thank you to all those who observed the Moon and reported.

As I stated previously, usually the Moon disappears for two or three and occasionally four moonless nights. According to calculations, only about once in 18 years there is a reasonable chance that the Moon will disappear to the naked eye for only one night. This occurs when the Moon is close to the Earth, preferably in mid-summer (although it can also occur in mid-winter). This month was such a case but with a very low probability of naked eye visibility and indeed the wane Moon was only seen with binoculars.

About a year ago, members of the Israeli New Moon Society saw both lunar crescents back-to-back with the naked eye. This year the apparition was more difficult, nonetheless we saw it with binoculars. To the best of my knowledge, I am the only person to have seen this phenomenon twice even with optical aid.

This is a very rare even and the next chance to see it from Israel is only on 30^th-31^st January 2014 with a probability of naked eye visibility of 11%.

Next month, the Moon will appear on Thursday 23^rd July 2009. From Jerusalem (and similarly for the rest of Israel) the Moon may be visible from 19:38 till 20:39 and will be very easy to see. At 19:38 the Moon will be at azimuth 276° (18½° left of the sunset) and 12½° high. The Moon may be seen with great difficulty a day earlier from the South-Western USA while from Scandinavia the Moon will only appear on Friday.
