סהרי הירח נראו גב-אל-גב החודש בעין בלתי מזוינת עם רק לילה אחד בלי הירח ביניהם. בנוסף לסיעתה דשמייה הצלחה זו הייתה תוצאה מאמץ ממוקד על ידי עשרות חברי האגודה הישראלית לצפייה בירח החדש ועבור זה ניתן להרגיש סיפוק של עבודה מושלמת היטב. זוהי המקרה המתועד היטב הראשון של ראייה כפולה כזו בעין בלתי מזוינת מהארץ או מכל מקום בעולם מתחת לגובה 1800 מטר. שני מקרים דווחו מדרום אפריקה ומהוואי מהרים גבוהים ועוד שלוש תצפיות מדרום אפריקה וארה"ב (כולל אחד מחבר לאגודה הישראלית לצפייה בירח, ג'ים סטאם, מטוסון, אריזונה) בעזרת מכשיר אופטי לפחות לאחת מהתצפיות. זו גם הפעם הראשונה שזוג תצפיות כזה צולם.

בדרך כלל, ברוחב של הארץ, הירח נעלם לשנים או שלושה ולפעמים ארבע לילות. חישובים תיאורטיים רמזו שפעם בכ-18 שנה בארץ, יש לירח סיכוי סביר להיעלם רק ללילה אחד. החודש היה מקרה כזה. לפי החישוב הירח המתמעט היה קשה יותר מאשר הירח המתחדש אך אובך ביום רביעי גרם לשני התצפיות להיות קשה ביותר.

לכן לפחות ששה תצפיתנים בלפחות חמש מקומות יצאו לפנות בוקר לחפש סהר ירח מתמעט קשה מאוד ביום שלישי כ"ט אייר תשס"ח. אני ראיתי את הירח בשמיים בהירים בין 04:53 ו-05:10 ממעלה אדומים בעזרת משקפת אך לא הצלחתי לראותו בעין בלתי מזוינת. טמפרטורה C°½17, לחות 33%, לחץ 957 מיליבר. תום ויהושע רוזנפלד ראו את הירח באפרת במשקפת בין 04:50 ו-05:10. יהושע גם ראה אותו בעין בלתי מזוינת מ-04:50 עד 04:52. זו הראייה הכי קרוב לקיבוץ ושל הסהר הדק ביותר שנרשם בארץ. דיווחו על עננים באשדוד ובאר שבע ויוסף מושא לא הצליח לראות את הירח מאופקים מחמת אובך.

לפחות 28 תצפיתנים ברחבי הארץ יצאו לחפש את הירח ביום רביעי א' סיון תשס"ח. קבוצה של כ-15 תצפיתנים משתתפי קורס באסטרונומיה יהודית בשיבת כרם ביבנה לקחו הפסקה מהלימודים הרגילים לטובת שיעור פרקטי. הם ראו את הירח בעזרת משקפות בין 20:07 ו-20:20. מתוכם ארבע הצליחו לראות את הירח החל מ-20:10.

הייתי באירוע שכונתי ולא צפיתי שאוכל לבצע חיפוש רציני לירח. אולם מצאתי רבע שעה לצאת בדיוק בזמן הנכון. הייתי מצויד במצלמה דיגיטלית בלבד (ללא משקפת). כאשר חיפשתי לשווא, ילד מהתיכון המקומי, נתנאל גוברמן, הצטרף. לא יכולתי לראות את הירח לכן ניסיתי בזום המרבי להעביר את המצלמה לשהייה של שתי שניות ובצעתי קדם-מיקוד על תאורה רחוקה והעמדתי את המצלמה על קיר ועל פקק העדשה. זה עבד! קבלתי כמה תמונות ובעזרתן וההדרכה שלי נתנאל ראה את הירח.

תום, סו ובקי רוזנפלד ראו את הירח בעין בלתי מזוינת מאפרת וכך השלימו את התצפית גב-אל-גב ממקום אחד.

תוצאות התצפית של יום רביעי כדלהלן:

מאשדוד מגדי שמואל ראה את הירח בעין בלתי מזוינת בין 20:09 ו-20:25 ואלי שמואל בין 20:15 ו-20:20.

מאפרת בקי וסו רוזנפלד ראו את הירח בין 20:07 ו-20:20 ותום רוזנפלד ראה אותו ב-20:15.

מפסגת זאב, ירושלים יוהן שוט ראה את הירח בין 20:10 ו-20:20 ונחמיה גורדון ראה אותו בין 20:10 ו-20:11 אומנם דבורה גיורדון לא הצליחה לראותו.

מכרם ביבנה אהוד אויאלי ראה את הירח בין 20:10 ו-20:20, ראובן חדד ועוד איש בין 20:15 ו- 20:20. דני לוי, שי ואלטר, רפאל לבנון ועוד כתשעה אנשים ראו את הירח במשקפת בלבד.

ממעלה אדומים נתנאל גוברמן ראה את הירח בין 20:16 ו-20:17 ולא יכולתי לראותו אך הצלחתי לצלמו.

דיווחו על עננים בעכו, ערד ואופקים.

למחרת, נתנאל גוברמן הופיע בפני בית דין לשחזור מסירת עדות החודש ובית הדין קבלו עדותו כעדות נאמנת.

בחודש הבא ירח יופיע ביום ששי א' תמוז תשס"ח. ייתכן שהירח יופיע החל מ-19:36 בירושלים ובצורה דומה משאר הארץ באזימות °½282 וברום °18. לא יהיה שחזור מסירת עדות בבית דין בחודש הבא משום שזה מהווה חודש מלא שלא היו גובים בו עדות כאשר קידשו לפי הראייה.

גב-אל-גב סהרי הירח שנראו ממעלה אדומים, בצד ימין הירח המתמעט ביום שלישי כ"ט אייר תשס"ח 05:04 ובצד שמאל הירח המתחדש ביום רביעי א' סיון תשס"ח 20:12.

Back-to-back crescent Moons were observed this month with the naked eye with only one moonless night in between. This success was a result of a concerted effort by tens of members of the Israeli New Moon Society for which I think we can all take pride in a job well done. This is the first well documented case of a double naked-eye sighting in Israel or anywhere in the World from one location at less than 1800 meters above sea-level. Two other cases in South Africa and Hawaii have been reported from high mountains and three further sightings were made in South Africa and the USA (including one by Israeli New Moon Society member, Jim Stamm, from Tucson, Arizona) using optical aid for at least one of the pair. It is also the first time that such a pair of sightings has been photographed.

Usually, at the latitude of Israel, the Moon disappears for two or three and occasionally four nights. Theoretical calculations have suggested that once in about 18 years in Israel, the Moon has a reasonable chance of disappearing for only one night. This was the case this month. In theory the New Moon was easier to see than the old Moon but hazier skies on Wednesday meant that both observations were extremely difficult.

As a result at least six observers in at least five locations went to look for a very difficult waning crescent on Tuesday morning 3^rd June 2008. I observed the Moon in a clear sky from 04:53 till 05:10 from Maale Adumim with binoculars but could not see it with the naked eye. T 17½°C, RH 33%, P 957 mbar. Tom and Joshua Rosenfeld observed from Efrat. They saw the Moon with binoculars from 04:50 till 05:10. Joshua also saw it with the naked eye from 04:50 till 04:52. This is the closest sighting to a conjunction and the thinnest crescent ever reported in Israel. Clouds were reported from Ashdod and Beer Sheva. Yosef Musah could not see the Moon from Ofakim citing haze.

At least 28 observers gathered around Israel to observe the Moon on Wednesday 4^th June 2008. A group of about 15 observers who are in the middle a course on Jewish astronomy at the Kerem Byavne Yeshivah took a break from their class for some practical fieldwork. They observed the Moon with binoculars between 20:07 and 20:20. Four of them managed to see the Moon with the naked eye starting at 20:10.

I was at a neighborhood event and was not expecting to be able to make a serious attempt at observing this Moon. However, I found about 15 minutes at exactly the right time to go outside. I was only carrying a digital camera (no binoculars). As I searched in vain, a local high-schoolboy, Natanel Guberman, decided to join me. I could not see the Moon so I tried, at maximum zoom, setting the camera on a two second delay, prefocussing on some distant streetlights and then balancing the camera on a wall and its lenscap. It worked! I took a series of pictures and with these and my guidance Netanel saw the Moon.

Tom, Sue and Becky Rosenfeld observed the Moon with the naked eye from Efrat completing the back-to-back naked eye observation from a single location.

The results for Wednesday evening were as follows.

From Ashdod Magdi Shamuel saw the Moon with the naked eye from 20:09 till 20:25 and Eli Shamuel from 20:15 till 20:20

From Efrat Becky and Sue Rosenfeld saw the Moon from 20:07 till 20:20 and Tom Rosenfeld saw the Moon at 20:15.

From Pisgat Zeev, Jerusalem by Johan Schutte from 20:10 till 20:20 and Nehemia Gordon at 20:10 till 20:11, while Devorah Gordon tried but could not see the Moon.

From Kerem Byaneh, Ehud Urieli from 20:10 till 20:20, Reuven Chadad and one other from 20:15 till 20:20 and with binoculars only, Danny Levy, Shai Walter, Rephael Levanon and about nine others.

From Maale Adumim Natanel Guberman saw the Moon between 20:16 and 20:17 and I could not see it but succeeded in photographing it.

Clouds were reported from Acre, Arad and Ofakim.

The next day, Netanel Guberman went to the beit din in Jerusalem and they too accepted his report.

Next month’s Moon will appear in Israel on Friday 4^th July 2008. The Moon may appear as early as 19:36 in Jerusalem and similarly for the rest of Israel, at azimuth 282½°, 15° left of the sunset and 18° high. There will be no reconstruction of the beit din receiving reports next month as this would represent a 30 day month the beit din would not have convened when the calendar was determined by observation.
