2005/10/06
Dear All,
Here are some more details of
this month's observations. On Tuesday 4th October 2005, the Moon was
only seen by Magdi Shamuel and two others with great difficulty using 11×80
tripod mounted binoculars from Mt.
Hezkiyhau between 18:46
and 18:51. This was NOT a naked eye sighting. Jupiter was also seen with
binoculars starting at 18:40.
The New Moon was clearly seen
from Israel
yesterday (Wednesday 5th October 2005). It was first seen with the
naked eye by Eliyahu Katz from Ofra and Pam Dow from the Old
City, Jerusalem
at 18:12, by Tim Arndt from Poria at 18:18 and by Devorah Gordon from Talpiot, Jerusalem at 18:23. This
is in addition to the yesterday's report of Magdi Shamuel from Eilat at 18:20.
A new moonwatch program was
started in the UK
this last week. More details will become available at www.crescentmoonwatch.org. It is
hoped that we can share information to further refine our lunar visibility
criteria.
Next month's New Moon should be
visible on Thursday 3rd November 2005 (unless the sky is very hazy)
from Israel
and most of the rest of the World. However, the Moon will only be visible in
the UK on Friday 4th
November and will not be visible from Scandinavia until Saturday 5th
November although there is an outside chance of seeing it from southern Sweden
on Friday 4th November.
