2005/06/07

Dear All,

Please look for the New Moon tonight (Tuesday 7th June 2005) and report your observations even if it is not seen. It is on the limit of visibility from Israel so attempting to observe is very important even though the chances of seeing it with the naked eye are very slim. It is also a very young Moon at 18¾ hours. If it is not seen, then please look again tomorrow.

Observation guides for next year (5766 or 2005/6) are now available in English and Hebrew from our website (www.geocities.com/royh_il).

Thank you for your comments on terminology. Most (about ¾) of those who replied thought that there should not be a change in the society's name so there will not be. Most also said, that they were not confused by the current terminology so we will continue to use New Moon as referring to the Moon's first appearance (also known as 'phasis' and 'young crescent Moon') and conjunction to refer to the situation where the Moon is directly between the Earth and the Sun (or more precisely: at the same ecliptic longitude and also known as 'no Moon' and 'astronomical new Moon').

Yours,

Roy.
