2005/05/16

Dear All,

Observation guides for next year (5766 or 2005/6) are now available in English and Hebrew from our website (www.geocities.com/royh_il).

Thank you for your comments on terminology. Most (about ¾) of those who replied thought that there should not be a change in the society's name so there will not be. Most also said, that they were not confused by the current terminology so we will continue to use New Moon as referring to the Moon's first appearance and conjunction to refer to the situation where the Moon is directly between the Earth and the Sun (or more precisely: at the same ecliptic longitude).

In addition to the two reports included in the last message several other reported. On Sunday 8th May 2005, the New Moon was seen with binoculars only from Gates Pass near Tucson, AZ, USA from 19:26 to 19:36 (UTC -7) by John Polacheck, Andrew Cooper, Alan Grabman and Faye Libbey. On Monday 9th May 2005, the New Moon was seen by Magdi Shamuel from Ashdod at 19:32, Bethany Rose from the Golan Heights at 19:34, Tom Rosenfeld from Efrat at 19:35, Naama Abaje from Talmon at 19:36, Elliyahu Katz from Mt. Scopus, Jerusalem at 19:36, Nehemia Gordon from Talpiot, Jerusalem at 19:38, Melekh Ben-Yaakov from Ein Karem, Jerusalem at 19:40 and Ariq Arar from Gothenburg, Sweden at 21:52 (UTC+2).

Yours,

Roy.
