Dear All,

The Moon was not seen from Israel tonight (Saturday 9th April 2005). The atmosphere was hazy throughout Israel and the Moon was not seen from Jersualem, Beer Sheva or Kibbutz Saad. The Moon was only expected to have been visible if the sky had have been very clear. Please look again tomorrow (Sunday 10th). The Moon is expected to appear in Jerusalem between 18:42 and 19:08 when it will be between 20 and 25° (a span) high and slightly left of the Sun and remain visible until or almost until it sets at 20:54.

Last Thursday, April 7th 2005, I saw the old Moon from Maale Adumim till it faded at 06:17. (T 11.5°C, P 968mbar, RH 44%) The old Moon is the opposite of the New Moon in position, orientation and time. The old Moon appears in the East, generally tilted the opposite direction to the New Moon and fades gradually as it moves upwards. Geometrically, the parameters for the old Moon are the same as for a New Moon. Therefore one could assume that observations of the old Moon can be used to develop criteria the appearance of the New Moon. However, the atmospheric conditions are different in morning and evening so this may not be strictly true. Nonetheless, several years of observations have not yet proved that there is a difference. The observation of old Moons is important, if they are the same as New Moons, then they add to the number of observations and if they are different, the difference has to be proven before discarding such observations. If you are interested in observing old Moons, please contact me.
